***I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This has in no way changed my opinion of the book. The review below is my open and honest opinion.***

from Goodreads:
Set in the months
before Half Bad, Half Lies takes the form of a diary written by Michele, the
sister of Gabriel, Nathan’s Black witch friend. Having fled Europe for Florida,
Michele falls in love with a local White witch boy. There, she finds that the divide
between the Black and White witch communities is just as dangerous as it was in
the life she’s left behind.

I try so hard to like
novellas. I want to like them, really, I do. Especially when they accompany a
series that I LOVED. Half-Bad was
amazing. I loved how dark and gritty it was. I loved Nathan. I loved the world
and the division between the White and Black witches. So when I was asked if I
wanted to review the novella, I jumped at the chance.
There was nothing
really “wrong” with this book; it just wasn’t really for me. I will admit that
part of the problem is that I really don’t remember all that much about
Gabriel. Let’s blame book amnesia. I vaguely remember Nathan meeting him and
getting to know him, but I think I may have enjoyed this more had I remembered
him better. I also wasn’t a huge fan of the diary format. Another personal
preference. It just seemed to kind of jump all over the place and I felt like
we missed details this way.
I did, however, like
the sibling dynamic and relationship in this book. Sibling relationships are
always the best and this one was something special. You could tell how much
Gabriel and Michele cared for one another. Despite everything that had happened
to their family, you just knew that they would always have each other’s backs.
Overall, I feel like
this didn’t contribute much towards the main plot of the series, but it’s a
quick read and if you remember Gabriel better than I do (epic fail), I think
that you’ll enjoy this look into his background. And I can’t wait for the second
book in the series to come out!

Have you read this novella yet? What did you think?

  1. I really don't like novellas, I have to say. One of the few I liked was Elixir by JLA, but that was because I was DYING because of the cliffhanger in Deity. I've decided to stay away from them unless I just need a "fix." 🙂 ~Pam
