YA Fantasy Books You Should Have on Your TBR

You know what I love? Fantasy. Magic? Couldn’t be happier. Dragons? Yes, please. Elves, wizards, trolls, dwarfs, fae? Hell yes. Fantasy is my all-time favorite genre. Why? Because it truly allows me to escape into a world wholly different from my own. Fantasy allows me to imagine extraordinary things that I will never experience in real life. Damn. I so wish magic was real. That being said, I got lost on Goodreads the other day looking at upcoming fantasy releases. And I got so excited that I knew I had to share them all with you.

Like YA fantasy? You're going to want to add these books to your TBR - unboundpages.com

2015 Series Continuers:

The Winner’s Crime (The Winner’s Curse #2) – March 3rd – No magic in this series, but some seriously awesome politics. I’m a little scared to read this though…I hear the ending is killer.

The Immortal Heights by Sherry Thomas (Elemental Trilogy #3) – October 13th – Eeeeeep! I can’t WAIT for this book! I LOVE this series and the ending of The Perilous Sea nearly killed me!!

Ice Like Fire by Sara Raasch (Snow Like Ashes #2) – October 13th – I really enjoyed Snow Like Ashes and can’t wait to see where the series is going to go next! I love the different season-based kingdoms and the rhythm kingdoms. Such an interesting world Sara has created!

Blood Passage by Heather Demetrios (Dark Caravan Cycle #2) – October 6th – Jinnis!! I really enjoyed Exquisite Captive when I read it last year. Great world-building, interesting characters, especially Malek who is super screwed, yet I still find him extremely attractive. What’s wrong with me??

The Rose Society by Marie Lu (The Young Elites #2) – October 6th – I must find out what’s going to happen to Adelina! And I’m hoping that Marie Lu doesn’t shatter my heart again after the ending of The Young Elites.

Soulbroken by Heather Brewer (Legacy of Tril #2) – Fall 2015 – So there was a lot of up and down with this book as in it’s not getting published and then it will be published as an ebook. I am so happy they decided to publish this book! I need to know what happens to Kaya and Darius!! Especially after that cliffhanger from Soulbound.

Hidden Huntress by Danielle L. Jensen (The Malediction Trilogy #2) – June 2nd – I still have yet to read Stolen Songbird…fail…but I’ve heard nothing but good things about it. These books are about trolls guys! Hot trolls!

The Heart of Betrayal by Mary E. Pearson (The Remnant Chronicles #2) – July 7th – The assassin vs. the prince. Omg who am I going to choose?? And what is going to happen to Lia?? She’s in Venda now! Wtf!?!

Firewalker by Josephine Angelini (Worldwalker #2) – September 1st – Witches, parallel worlds, swoony boys. Omg I LOVED Trial by Fire and I can’t wait to continue this series!

The Invasion of the Tearling by Erika Johansen (The Queen of the Tearling #2) – June 9th – I still haven’t read the first book, but I’ve heard great things about it! Maybe I can hold off til June and then read them back to back.

2015 New Series/Debuts:

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab – February 24th – This is already out and I’ve already read it and it is AMAZING. Parallel Londons. Magic. Twisted, messed up stuff. Two awesome main characters. You’re not going to want to miss this one.

Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley – April 28th – Ships above the clouds in a parallel universe. Yes, please!!

The Girl at Midnight by Melissa Grey – April 28th – An underground world of magical people with feathers for hair. This sounds awesome!

The Orphan Queen by Jodi Meadows – March 10th – I’ve been hearing mixed things about this, but I’m holding out hope that I’ll love it. A princess/spy for a main character?? It just sounds so twisty and awesome.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo – October 6th – This series is set in the same world as The Grisha Trilogy and is sure to be awesome. I need to read The Grisha trilogy first, but I’ve heard so many amazing things that I’m sure I’ll love it and this new series as well.

Walk on Earth a Stranger by Rae Carson – September 22nd – Rae Carson’s new series!!! About a girl who can sense gold during the Gold Rush. I imagine her life is pretty dangerous.

Hunter by Mercedes Lackey – September 1st – Fantastical monsters. People called Hunters who go kill them. Oh yeah, and they put all of this on reality TV.

The Witch Hunter by Virginia Boecker – June 2nd – The most famous witch hunter gets accused of being a witch and is sentenced to burn. There’s also wizards, ghosts, pirates and healers!

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir – April 28th – A brutal, ancient Rome-like world and a young girl trying to get through an intense military academy.

Becoming Jinn by Lori Goldstein – April 21st – A world where if you have Jinn blood, you become a full-fledged Jinn at age 16 and have to accept a life of servitude. But the main character’s powers seem to be more deadly than everyone else’s…

Court of Fives by Kate Elliott – April 18th – Class-based society? Check. High stakes athletic competition? Check. This sounds like high stakes Olympics.

Dreamstrider by Lindsay Smith – October 6th – A girl working for an evil empire by entering the dreams of other people and pulling out their political secrets. Dirty politics? Count me in!

Truthwitch by Susan Dennard – 2015 – This is pitched as “Garth Nix meets Avatar: The Last Airbender”. I don’t really know how much better this can get.

Soundless by Richelle Mead – November 17th – OMG this sounds so good!!! It’s a fantasy based on Chinese folklore and involves using sound as a weapon.

2016 Releases:

Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake – 2016 – Triplet sisters, separated at birth. One will be queen but must first assassinate the other two sisters. Kendare Blake. It’s sure to be awesome.

Ruined by Amy Tintera – 2016 – A pretend engagement. That’s pretty much all we know. Don’t care. Still psyched.

Nemesis by Anna Banks – 2016 – A princess who has the power to create energy. Escapes evil father. Captured by another kingdom. Heck yes.

Riders by Veronica Rossi – 2016 – Four teens who become incarnates of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. YOU GUYS! IT’S VERONICA FREAKING ROSSI!

And I Darken by Kiersten White – 2016 – Pitched as “A teenage Game of Thrones set in the Ottoman Empire”. Sign me up!

Tell the Wind and Fire by Sarah Rees Brennan – 2016 – Alternate NY. Soulless doppleganger. Light magic. Dark magic. God this sounds amazing.

So which fantasy novels are you most excited about? Are there any missing from my list that I should know about? If you like this list, check out my one about 2015/2016 retellings

  1. So many great books!! I'm saving this one so I can add some to my TBR that I don't have. YA Fantasy is pretty much my favorite genre right now. Sadly, the ones in 2016 are the ones I'm most excited about. That's too far away!!! Great post, thanks! ~Pam
